Driven by AI chip demand, South Korean memory chipmaker SK Hynix has seen its profits surge, and employee bonuses are reshaping the perception of social class in South Korea. In 2025, the company's operating profit hit a record high of 47.2 trillion KRW. Under a 10% profit-sharing bonus system, an employee earning an annual salary of 100 million KRW received a bonus of 148.2 million KRW. With the Q1 net profit already reaching 40.3 trillion KRW, Cybernews estimates the average annual bonus per employee will be around 600 million KRW (approximately $430,000). The average monthly salary in Seoul is about 4.3 million KRW (around $3,000).

This windfall has triggered a series of social ripple effects:

– South Korean matchmaking agencies state that SK Hynix employees now share the same elite status as doctors and lawyers. On the anonymous workplace community Blind, employees share that "blind date invitations have surged recently." Some joke that dual-income couples at the company could see their combined bonuses exceed 1 billion KRW next year.

– Company uniform jackets are being sold on second-hand platforms for 40,000 KRW (about 190 RMB), advertised as the "ultimate blind date armor," quickly attracting thousands of views. SNL Korea aired a satirical sketch: luxury store clerks ignore a plainly dressed customer, but instantly change their attitude upon seeing the SK Hynix logo, addressing them as "Lord Hynix."

– Side effects have also emerged: since bonuses are tied to attendance days, parental leave is seen as "giving up income." The paternity leave usage rate dropped from 2.8% in 2023 to 2% in 2025. On Blind, an employee posted that if his wife takes two years of parental leave, the bonus loss would be about 300 million KRW, leaving the couple deeply conflicted.

SK Hynix reformed its bonus system last September, removing the previous 1000% bonus cap and switching to a fixed 10% share of operating profits over a 10-year period. The knock-on effects have spread to Samsung Electronics: Samsung's union is demanding bonuses be raised to 15% of operating profits, while the company president called the demand "excessive."
